Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as NGC 34, is a Seyfert 2 galaxy located 270 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of -12 degrees. It is hard for me to believe that this object has not been imaged on Astrobin before.

The main galaxy section (without the star stream) of this magnitude 13.5 object spans 40 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of about 60,000 light years.

This object is a late stage merger of 2 galaxies.  With its merged central section, dust lanes and long tail, it reminds me of Arp 192.   I am surprised that Dr. Arp did not select this object for his peculiar galaxy catalog.

The interesting object at the top of the image, NGC 35, is the same distance away.  The two objects could be interacting with each other.
